Future New Media Journalist at UNC?

Now Watching

On Monday I was honored when fellow blogger and internet legend Paul Jones referred me to Monique Newton the vice president of the Carolina Association of Black Journalists to sit in on a panel to discuss "Alternative Media: The New Wave of Journalism." With me just coming from SoCon08 I had plenty of information to share with the students. Carolina Association of Black Journalists session PanelAlong with Paul Jones and myself, Professor Ryan Thornburg, Nicole Norfleet and Teresa Carol Artis '83. (Former Vice Chair, UNC Board of Visitors, and General Counsel of Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc ) talked with the students about how we got started with media, how important it is to know online technology and blogging. Other topics were entrepreneurship with journalism, studying online advertising and for the students to take advantage of the digital learning workshops held at UNC that cover final cut pro, Photoshop and web development. But one of the biggest questions from the students came when they asked, what they should be doing now to prepare for new media jobs. So I put the question on twitter to get some feedback from others. Take a look at what some of my twitter friends had to say.

After the session I asked Amanda the president of the UNC Association of Black Journalists to make a few comments about the session and for others to announce what they're doing now in new media/journalism and there future plans. And at the end of the day, I received a thank you card from CABJ. Little do they know that I'm a huge UNC fan so that was extra sweet. I wish all the students much success in the future. Very Cool Wayne! I’m glad you’re out there spreading the word.

I think its important for new journalists to get out of the office and make media. What I mean by this is to explore what non-journalist, people who don’t work for media companies, are doing. Mainly because there is a big movement towards citizen journalism or individual media making. Nonprofessionals are on the cutting edge. Not media owners.

Plus there is no guarantee that a job will be out there for you forever. WE have to make our own opportunities. Be entrepreneurial and creative. Make your own independent media and share it DIRECTLY with people.

Most importantly media is a conversation. A two way conversation.

Cheers!
