How to embrace social media in the newsroom with Kara Andrade

Now Watching

With my last video from the Next Newsroom conference, I had a chance to interview Kara Andrade who is a Social Media Strategist and Web Editor at Maynard Institute. Kara also trains journalist to use social media tools, mentions how it’s a journalist job to filter signal from the noise, and gives advice for journalist/newsrooms that are looking to embrace social media. Kara also answered a few questions on how to get started with social media and what social networking sites should newsrooms keep an eye on now. Video length 4:16 NextNewsroom-logo

Nice interview. It’s interesting how things have changed so much in the last few years. Used to be that journalists couldn’t get enough information for stories—now they often have too much and have to “filter” it, like Kara says. Do you think that the more filtering a journalist does, the greater chance there is for loss of objectivity? Or maybe you can see this from the other end of the spectrum, where the more filtering there is, the greater the probability that the correct facts will be revealed?
